Travel Safe During The Covid-19 Emergency

Corona virus has changed the way we all live our lives, and has affected every single aspect of our daily routine, from shopping to the morning commute. “New Normal” is very different from our old routines, including social detachment, complex cleanliness and even when we are out and wearing masks all the time. Even as we slowly come out of the epidemic and try to regain normalcy, we still need to take precautions to prevent the virus from spreading. It involves rethinking the way you travel in your car for fun or the way to and from work. To help you out, we’ve put together some tips and precautions you can take both inside and outside your car.

What can you do in your car to stay safe?

Social distancing includes enclosed spaces such as cars, either your own or from car rental service, so you shouldn’t offer friends or work colleagues a ride, even if you know them well. Only keep a very small “bubble” of close relatives and the family or close contacts (no more than three or four at most) on any car trip. The easiest way to defeat the virus is to wash your hands, so wash your hands before getting in the car and also after getting out the car at the end of trip. If you can’t wash your hands with soap and water, make sure you have a Hand-Sanitizer to use.

Safety tip: Keep in mind that both hand sanitizers and latex gloves are highly flammable, so do not leave them in a hot car or in direct sunlight, especially during the summer. Our Hint: Buy a hand-held pocket-sized container and take it with you so you remember to use it whenever you’re out and about.

Weekly cleaning

If you use the car from car rental everyday then a thorough weekly valet is the best way to keep things safe and clean. The virus does not last long on most surfaces, but it can survive for days, like plastic and metal. However, at higher temperatures the virus becomes inactive. Washing with soap and warm water is sufficient to remove any traces of the virus from the exterior surfaces: pay close attention to general contact areas such as door handles and the sides of the door, including the ceiling. Inside, make sure that all waste, such as used tissues, is properly cleaned and that key contact areas such as the steering wheel, shift lever, parking brake, seat belt and glove box are thoroughly cleaned.

When you arrive

While there’s been much debate about the use of personal protective equipment (or PPE), the general consensus is that masks are useful in controlling transmission of the disease. However, gloves can be problematic, especially if you are wearing the same pair and have visited multiple places, which can actually spread the disease through contact. It is better to avoid wearing gloves and use hand sanitizer regularly and wash your hands whenever possible. If you wear gloves in a store, be sure to remove them carefully before returning to your car to avoid possible contamination. Overall, the easiest way to prevent corona virus while driving during an emergency is to maintain a high level of personal hygiene and cleanliness. Covid-19 can be beaten through simple and practical techniques, and plenty of warm, soapy water! Stay up to date with the latest developments surrounding COVID-19 by monitoring government sources in the UAE and official health professionals.
